Hudson Whitman’s first book is Saving Troy, by William B. Patrick. We chose to start with Saving Troy because we have the sense that this could be a break-out book that will appeal to a large, diverse audience, from an author who is experienced in a number of literary genres. Mr. Patrick has already published a widely-praised memoir, We Didn’t Come Here for This, an award-winning novel, Roxa: Voices of the Culver Family, both with BOA Editions, and two books of poetry. He has also written plays for the BBC, teleplays for ABC, and feature-length screenplays.
Saving Troy is a compelling chronicle of a year with professional firefighters and paramedics in Troy, New York -- a down-at-the-heels, rust-belt city that is committed to changing its fortunes. William B. Patrick rode along with the members of the Troy Fire Department’s 1 st Platoon for eighteen months, and from that time he has fashioned a vivid, non-fiction narrative and a unique DVD that take the reader not only inside the action but straight to the dramatic core of every call that he re-creates for us – so close you can almost hear the heart monitor’s buzz. |
